If you’ve been going back and forth on when to book your Sri Lanka trip, you’re not alone. Sri Lanka is small, but it has two separate monsoon systems doing their own thing on opposite sides of the island at the same time. This is the detail that surprises most visitors: the South-Western Monsoon brings rain to the south-west and south coast from May to September, while the North-Eastern Monsoon brings rain to the east and north coast from October to January. Because the two coasts experience opposite seasons, the best time to visit depends on which part of Sri Lanka you plan to visit.

For travellers heading to the south, the hill country, and the cultural triangle, including Udawalawe, the good weather generally falls in the same period.

December to March – the most reliable period for clear, dry weather across the south coast, the hill country, and the safari regions.

April, and from May onward – travel conditions improve again in the south as the rains ease, although short afternoon showers are still possible.

June to September — a better period for the east coast (such as Trincomalee and Arugam Bay), while the south experiences more rain.

The dry season is also the best time for wildlife viewing, for a simple reason. As smaller water sources dry up, animals gather around the remaining larger water sources. This is when visitors are most likely to see large groups of elephants together, particularly near reservoirs, in the early morning. This effect is strongest in the southern dry zone between December and March, making it the best window for anyone visiting primarily for wildlife. Yala National Park closes part of its area to visitors every year for about a month, usually starting in September, to allow the park to rest after the busy tourist season. This year, Zones 1 and 2 of Yala are scheduled to close from 14 September 2026. If your travel dates fall within this period and you were planning to visit Yala, it is worth knowing that alternatives are available.

Udawalawe National Park remains open throughout the year and is well known for consistent elephant sightings.

If we had to recommend what we feel is the best time to visit Sri Lanka, it would be December through to March, which combines dry weather, strong wildlife sightings, and comfortable travel conditions.
